The National Scholarship Portal (NSP) at scholarships.gov.in is the Government of India single online platform for applying, verifying and paying scholarships to students, launched in 2015 as a Mission Mode Project under the National e-Governance Plan and developed by the National Informatics Centre. It brings together scholarship schemes of central ministries and many state governments, such as pre-matric, post-matric and merit-cum-means scholarships, so that one registration serves many schemes. Payment is made through direct benefit transfer to the student's Aadhaar-linked bank account, and recent rules require one-time registration and Aadhaar-based authentication.

Where Does It Fit?
The portal is the application and payment layer for many education schemes. It connects with identity, documents and bank systems on the other platforms in this macro, such as DigiLocker, and it delivers the scholarships described in other subjects of this site. Previous topic: PM-KISAN Portal. Next topic: Government e-Marketplace (GeM).
Which Schemes Does the Portal Carry?
| Group | Examples |
|---|---|
| Pre-matric | Scholarships for students in classes IX and X from several ministries, including those for SC, ST, OBC and minority students |
| Post-matric | Scholarships for study after class X, as in Post-Matric and Pre-Matric Scholarship Schemes for SC/ST/OBC Students |
| Merit-cum-means | Support for meritorious students from poor families, including minority students |
| Merit | Merit-based schemes such as the National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme, as in National Means-cum-Merit Scholarship Scheme |
| Top class | Schemes for students from weaker sections to study at notified top institutions |
| State schemes | Many states use the portal for their own scholarships, which is why one login serves several schemes |
How Does the Portal Process an Application?
- Registration: students first complete One Time Registration, which creates a permanent OTR number that can be used across years and schemes
- Authentication: Aadhaar-based biometric or face authentication is used to confirm that the applicant is a real person, as reported in notices for recent academic years
- Application: students choose the scheme they are eligible for and fill in the form online
- Verification: the institution and then the nodal officers of the state and the ministry verify the application in a set order
- Payment: approved amounts are paid by direct benefit transfer to the bank account of the student, which removes delays and middlemen
- Duplication check: the system checks for repeated claims by one student, or fake students, using Aadhaar and other data
- Grievance: a helpdesk and a status tracker allow students to follow progress and file complaints
- Ministries: the portal is used by ministries such as Education, Social Justice and Empowerment, Minority Affairs and Tribal Affairs. Ownership of the platform is technical (NIC) and each ministry owns its own schemes
What Else Should You Remember?
- Full form and alias: National Scholarship Portal, written NSP, also called the one-stop platform for scholarships
- Latest status: the portal opens each academic year for fresh and renewal applications, with Aadhaar-based authentication and One Time Registration as steps in recent years. Check scholarships.gov.in for the current session and dates
- DBT benefit: direct benefit transfer reduced ghost beneficiaries and delays that earlier cash schemes suffered from
- Fake beneficiaries: earlier audits and reviews found cases of bogus institutions and students taking scholarships, which led to stricter verification
- Link to documents: income, caste and marks documents can be fetched from DigiLocker in some cases, as in DigiLocker
- Link to e-governance: the portal was one of the Mission Mode Projects under the National e-Governance Plan, which later became part of e-Kranti, as in e-Kranti and MyGov Platform
- Constitutional link: Article 46 asks the State to promote the educational and economic interests of weaker sections, and Article 15(4) allows special provisions for them
- Criticism: delays: payments are often delayed because states release their share late and verification takes time
- Criticism: exclusion: students without Aadhaar linkage, with biometric failures or with weak internet can face trouble in applying
- Way forward: time-bound payment, offline help desks, and clean linkage of bank accounts with Aadhaar
Why Does It Matter for the Exam?
- Nature: a single window for scholarship applications, not a scholarship scheme itself
- Developer: National Informatics Centre under the National e-Governance Plan
- OTR: One Time Registration gives a permanent number
- Mode: payment through direct benefit transfer
- Common errors: treating the portal as a single scheme, or saying that it is run by the University Grants Commission
As an analytical point, the portal improves transparency and reduces leakage, but a scholarship is useful only when it arrives on time. Delays in verification and state shares, and exclusion due to technical problems, need to be reduced.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the National Scholarship Portal?
The National Scholarship Portal (NSP) at scholarships.gov.in is the Government of India single online platform for applying for, verifying and paying scholarships. It began in 2015 as a Mission Mode Project under the National e-Governance Plan, was developed by the National Informatics Centre, and carries schemes of central ministries and many states.
Who can apply on the National Scholarship Portal?
Students who meet the eligibility rules of a particular scholarship scheme can apply. They must first complete One Time Registration with Aadhaar-based authentication, and then choose a scheme such as pre-matric, post-matric or merit-cum-means. Income, caste and marks rules differ by scheme, so each scheme guideline must be read.
Which ministry runs the National Scholarship Portal?
The portal was developed by the National Informatics Centre, and each scholarship scheme is owned by its own ministry, such as Education, Social Justice and Empowerment, Minority Affairs or Tribal Affairs. The portal is a common technical platform, so no single ministry owns every scheme carried on it.
How are scholarships paid through the portal?
Scholarships are paid by direct benefit transfer to the Aadhaar-linked bank account of the student after the institution and the nodal officers verify the application. The system checks for duplicates, and students can track the status online. Delays can occur when verification or the release of the state share is slow.
What is the latest status of the National Scholarship Portal?
The portal opens every academic year for fresh and renewal applications. Recent notices require One Time Registration and Aadhaar-based biometric or face authentication, and applications for 2025-26 closed around December 2025. Dates and rules change by session, so the current notice on scholarships.gov.in should be checked.
