Short answer: UPSC previous year question papers (PYQs) are the official papers of earlier exams. Choose an exam below, and then narrow the list by year, stage or subject. You will find the Civil Services Prelims and Mains papers (General Studies, Essay and optional subjects) and the CAPF, CDS and NDA papers. They are the best guide to the style and level of the real exam.

How to Use UPSC Previous Year Questions

  1. Know the pattern first. Open one Prelims paper and one Mains paper and read them as a student, not as a solver. Notice the style, the mix of subjects and the words used.
  2. Solve by topic. After you finish a topic, solve its previous year questions the same day. Read the wrong options too, because UPSC often repeats the same idea in a new form.
  3. Build your own tally. Note the subject, topic and type of each question. After ten years you will see where marks come from.
  4. Attempt whole papers in the last months. Use the full Prelims papers in exam conditions, and use the Mains papers to practise timed answers.
  5. Review every mistake. Keep an error notebook and revise it every week.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I download UPSC previous year question papers?

UPSC publishes its past question papers on upsc.gov.in. This page lists every paper UPSC has put on its current and archive pages, from 2016 to 2026, and each link opens the official PDF. MaargX UPSC does not host or change the files.

How do I find the UPSC Prelims and Mains papers of a particular year?

Choose Civil Services, then pick Prelims or Mains and the year. The menus change with your choice: for Mains you can also pick General Papers, Optional Subjects, Literature or Compulsory Language Papers, and then a subject such as Sociology, PSIR, Geography or History.

Are the Mains optional subject papers included?

Yes. Each Civil Services (Mains) year has its Optional Subjects, Literature Optionals and Compulsory Language Papers, and you can narrow the list to a single subject.

How should I use previous year questions for Prelims?

Solve them topic by topic after you finish each topic, study why each wrong option is wrong, and then attempt whole papers in two hours in the last two months. Our Prelims strategy explains the method step by step.

How should I use previous year questions for Mains?

Use them to see the style and the demands of each paper, write timed answers, and compare them with a model answer. Start with the answer writing strategy and the paper-wise guides.

Does UPSC publish answer keys and cut-off marks?

UPSC has separate official pages for answer keys and cut-off marks. They are linked in the Official Sources section of this page. Check them for the exam and year that you need.

Why do some PDFs take long to open?

Some papers, especially scanned ones, are large files hosted by UPSC. Give the PDF a little time to load, or save it to your device.

How often is this list updated?

We re-check the official UPSC lists after each new exam and update this page. The date of the last check is shown at the top of the page.
