Current Affairs & Government Schemes › National Missions and Flagship Programmes · Topic 19.4

Mission LiFE, or Lifestyle for Environment, is a global mass movement launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on 20 October 2022 at Ekta Nagar in Kevadia, Gujarat. The idea was first put forward by India at the COP26 summit in Glasgow in November 2021. It asks individuals and communities to adopt simple, everyday actions that protect the environment, in place of mindless and destructive consumption. The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change leads it, and the plan for 2022 to 2028 aims to build a network of Pro-Planet People who practise and spread such habits.

Where Does It Fit?

This topic turns the climate argument into a behaviour campaign. It links environmental policy with the idea of participation covered in Jan Bhagidari and Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas Sabka Vishwas. A sibling page on the same campaign appears in another macro, so this page takes the mission design lens. Previous topic: Jan Bhagidari and Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas Sabka Vishwas. What Are the Themes and Phases of Mission LiFE?

Feature Detail
Seven themes Save energy, save water, reduce single-use plastic, adopt sustainable food systems, reduce waste, adopt healthy lifestyles and reduce e-waste
Phase one Change in demand: nudge individuals to practise simple LiFE actions in daily life
Phase two Change in supply: as demand shifts, industry and markets are expected to change production and supply
Phase three Change in policy: the shift in demand and supply is expected to push governments to frame supportive policies
Network Pro Planet People, a global community that practises and promotes such lifestyles. The mission aimed to reach and involve about one billion people by 2028
Platform The Ideas4LiFE portal collects ideas for sustainable lifestyle products and practices from individuals and start-ups
  • Origin at COP26: at Glasgow in 2021 India described LiFE as a way to move from mindless consumption to mindful and deliberate utilisation, alongside its Panchamrit pledges of net zero by 2070
  • NDC update: India’s updated Nationally Determined Contribution of 2022 mentions LiFE as a key part of the strategy
  • G20 outcome: under India’s 2023 presidency the G20 adopted high-level principles on lifestyles for sustainable development, which brought LiFE into a multilateral text
  • Behaviour economics: the mission uses nudges and social influence rather than penalties or subsidies
  • Target groups: schools, eco-clubs, urban local bodies, panchayats, youth and civil society organisations
  • Reported participation: as reported by the government in July 2026, over 7 crore people have taken part in LiFE events, with a large network of eco-clubs. These figures are self-reported
  • Ministry role: the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change coordinates, with NITI Aayog having shaped the concept, and states and local bodies carry out activities
  • International reach: the mission is meant to be global, and India has promoted it in the United Nations and other fora

What Else Should You Remember?

  • Meaning: LiFE stands for Lifestyle for Environment. The word life also stands for a way of living that respects limits of the planet
  • Not a fund-based scheme: it relies on awareness, partnerships and campaigns, with limited dedicated funding, which is a point critics raise
  • Everyday actions: examples include using public transport or cycling, carrying a cloth bag, switching off idle appliances, fixing leaks, composting kitchen waste and choosing local seasonal food
  • Sibling topic: another page on the same movement appears under another macro, as in LiFE Movement (Lifestyle for Environment). This page deals with how the mission is organised
  • Link with Swachh Bharat: plastic reduction and waste reduction connect LiFE with earlier cleanliness efforts
  • Link with Gati Shakti and logistics: LiFE is a demand-side effort, while planning programmes such as PM Gati Shakti are supply-side, as in Gati Shakti National Master Plan (Cross-Sectoral Infrastructure)
  • Millet and food: sustainable food systems tie to the push for millets, including the International Year of Millets in 2023
  • Measurement problem: behaviour change is hard to measure, and event counts do not show changes in actual energy or water use
  • Criticism: some observers say that it places the responsibility on individuals while larger emissions come from industry, power and transport, and that consumption by the poor is already low
  • Equity point: India’s argument at global fora is that rich countries have higher per capita consumption and should lead the change, in line with common but differentiated responsibilities

Why Does It Matter for the Exam?

  1. Launch details: date, place and the two leaders who launched it are asked as facts
  2. Seven themes: the list is used to build match and which-is-not questions. Trap options include afforestation and carbon trading
  3. Origin: announced at COP26 in Glasgow in 2021, launched in India in 2022
  4. P3: Pro Planet People, the global network of practitioners
  5. Common errors: confusing LiFE with the Panchamrit targets, or saying the mission is run by NITI Aayog

As an analytical point, LiFE is a useful complement to regulation, since habits and markets shape demand. Its limit is that individual choices cannot replace cuts in industry, power and transport emissions, so it works best with strong policy and clear measurement.
