First Battle of Panipat (1526) – Babur’s Victory Over Ibrahim Lodi
Medieval History › Mughal Period · Topic 6.2
At the First Battle of Panipat on 20 April 1526, Babur defeated Ibrahim Lodi, who was killed with some 15,000 of his men. Babur's strong defensive position of carts and breastworks, his Ottoman gunners Ustad Ali and Mustafa and his flank attacks decided the day, and the victory broke Lodi power and gave him Delhi and Agra, though the conquest was far from complete.

Where Does It Fit?
This is the second topic of the category on the Mughal period. The previous topic covered the road to Panipat, and this topic describes the battle itself. The next topic covers the problems Babur faced after his victory. Previous topic: Struggle Between Ibrahim Lodi and Babur.
What Forces Met at Panipat?
In short: Babur met a larger army with better tactics and artillery, and defeated Ibrahim Lodi in two or three hours.
Ibrahim Lodi met Babur at Panipat with a force estimated at 100,000 men and 1,000 elephants. Since Indian armies contained large hordes of servants, the real fighting men must have been far fewer. Babur had crossed the Indus with 12,000 men, swelled by his army in India and by many Hindustani nobles and soldiers who joined him in the Punjab, but his army was still the smaller one.
How Did Babur Prepare His Position?
| Feature | Detail |
|---|---|
| Right wing | Rested on the city of Panipat with its many houses |
| Left wing | Protected by a ditch filled with tree branches |
| Front | A large number of carts lashed together as a wall, with breastworks between pairs of carts for guns |
| Name | Babur calls it the Ottoman (Rumi) device, used by the Ottomans against Shah Ismail |
| Gunners | Two Ottoman master-gunners, Ustad Ali and Mustafa |
| Guns | Babur says he used gunpowder first in the attack on Bhira; it was known in India earlier but artillery became common in the north with his coming |
How Did the Battle Go?
Ibrahim Lodi had no idea of the strong position and apparently expected the mobile warfare usual among Central Asians, with rapid advance and retreat. After seven or eight days of skirmishing Ibrahim’s forces came out for the fateful battle but hesitated when they saw Babur’s position. While Ibrahim was reorganising, the two extreme wings of Babur’s army wheeled round and attacked from the side and rear, and the gunners fired effectively from the front. Babur credits much of the victory to his bowmen and says little about Ibrahim’s elephants, which had little time to act. Ibrahim’s army fought bravely for two or three hours. Ibrahim fought to the last with a group of 5,000 to 6,000, and about 15,000 of his men besides him are estimated to have been killed.
What Is the Timeline of the Campaign?
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| 1525 | Babur becomes master of the Punjab |
| Late 1525 to April 1526 | March towards Delhi; about a week of skirmishing at Panipat |
| 20 April 1526 | Battle of Panipat; Ibrahim Lodi killed |
| After the battle | Delhi and Agra occupied; Agra treasure taken |
| 1527 | Battle of Khanwa against Rana Sanga |
Was Panipat Really Decisive?
The battle is regarded as one of the decisive battles of Indian history. It broke the back of Lodi power and brought the area up to Delhi and Agra under Babur. The treasure Ibrahim had stored at Agra relieved Babur of his money troubles, and the rich land up to Jaunpur lay open. But Babur still had to fight two hard battles, one with Rana Sanga of Mewar and one with the eastern Afghans, to consolidate his hold. In this sense Panipat was not as decisive in politics as often said. Its real importance is that it opened a new phase in the struggle for dominance in north India.
As an analytical point, Panipat is best seen as a military demonstration: it showed how artillery and cavalry combined could defeat a much larger army using the older methods. For the next steps, see Babur’s Problems After the Battle of Panipat and Battle of Khanwa (1527) – Babur’s Struggle with Rana Sanga. Later battles at the same place are described in Ahmad Shah Abdali and allies Maratha commander Sadashivrao Bhau Afghan allies Najib-ud-Daula…">Third Battle of Panipat (1761) – Marathas vs. Ahmad Shah Abdali.
