How Does UMANG Fit Into Digital India?

  • Launch event: the app was launched at the Global Conference on Cyber Space in New Delhi on 23 November 2017
  • Digital India: the programme began on 1 July 2015 to make government services available digitally, and UMANG is a main application under it
  • National e-Governance Division: NeGD is the body under MeitY that runs digital government projects such as DigiLocker and UMANG
  • Services count: around 2,575 services were reported in July 2026, with about 880 from central departments and 1,695 from states and Union Territories
  • Transactions: about 798 crore transactions were reported over the past three years in a parliamentary reply of August 2026
  • Registered users: more than 11.66 crore were reported in the same reply
  • Integration: the app works with Aadhaar, DigiLocker, EPFO, the pension system and utility providers

What Else Should You Remember?

  • Full form and alias: UMANG is also written as Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance. The word umang means enthusiasm in Hindi
  • Sibling platforms: document storage is handled by DigiLocker, as in DigiLocker. Participation is handled by the platform in MyGov Portal
  • Link with e-Kranti: UMANG is part of e-Kranti, the National e-Governance Plan 2.0 under Digital India, as in e-Kranti and MyGov Platform
  • Latest status: the app is active, with the service and user numbers given above as reported to Parliament in 2026. Counts change often
  • Digital public infrastructure: UMANG is an example of a shared, interoperable platform that states can plug into
  • Benefits: lower travel and queues, one login for many services, and easy access for migrants
  • Limits: service depth varies, since some services only show information and do not complete transactions, and many people lack smartphones or digital skills
  • Cyber security: the app holds sensitive data, so strong security and the rules of the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 matter
  • Common mistake: many students assume UMANG stores documents. Documents are stored in DigiLocker, and UMANG fetches them
  • Who uses it: salaried workers check provident fund balances, pensioners view pension details, students look up scholarships and farmers access crop and market information, which shows the range of users the platform is built for
  • Digital public goods: the open integration design lets states reuse the same platform instead of building separate apps, which cuts duplicate spending and gives citizens a consistent look and feel
  • Future: more state services, integration with new departments and voice-based access in regional languages are named as directions in official material

Why Does It Matter for the Exam?

  1. Full form: Unified Mobile Application for New-Age Governance
  2. Launch and developers: 23 November 2017, MeitY and NeGD
  3. Purpose: a single window for central and state services
  4. Related platforms: DigiLocker for documents, MyGov for participation, Bharat BillPay for bills
  5. Common errors: giving the Ministry of Communications as the developer, or mixing UMANG with the BHIM payment app

As an analytical point, UMANG shows how a shared platform can cut the cost for states to build their own apps. Its value depends on how many services allow full online completion, and on digital access for those without smartphones.
