Current Affairs & Government Schemes › Defence and Security Current Affairs · Topic 21.13
The Defence Industrial Corridors are two planned clusters of defence manufacturing, in Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, announced in the Union Budget 2018-19 and set up under the Ministry of Defence, Department of Defence Production, to attract investment and build a domestic supply chain. The Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor (UPDIC) has six nodes at Aligarh, Agra, Jhansi, Kanpur, Chitrakoot and Lucknow, and the Tamil Nadu Defence Industrial Corridor (TNDIC), inaugurated in January 2019, covers Chennai, Coimbatore, Hosur, Salem and Tiruchirappalli. As reported in April 2026, commitments were about Rs 42,057 crore in Uttar Pradesh and Rs 32,699 crore in Tamil Nadu, but actual investment was far lower.

Where Does It Fit?
This topic closes the macro with the place-based part of the indigenisation drive. Corridors give land, utilities and test facilities where firms need them, so the plans in the other topics can become factories. Previous topic: Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and Theatre Command Restructuring. Next topic: Bharat Ratna and Padma Awards (Recent Recipients).
What Are the Two Defence Corridors and Their Nodes?
| Corridor | Key facts |
|---|---|
| Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor | Announced in 2018 and launched at the Uttar Pradesh Investors Summit. Six nodes at Aligarh, Agra, Jhansi, Kanpur, Chitrakoot and Lucknow, run through the state agency UPEIDA. A BrahMos integration and testing facility at Lucknow is among the anchor projects, as reported |
| Tamil Nadu Defence Industrial Corridor | Inaugurated on 20 January 2019. Nodes at Chennai, Coimbatore, Hosur, Salem and Tiruchirappalli, with strength in auto components, machining, electronics and aerospace parts. Older reports also listed Madurai, so check the current node list |
| Investment commitments | As reported in April 2026, about Rs 42,057 crore in Uttar Pradesh and about Rs 32,699 crore in Tamil Nadu. Grounded investment was reported at about Rs 4,409 crore and Rs 6,446 crore respectively |
| Land | Land has been acquired in several nodes, and about 1,000 acres of more land in Uttar Pradesh were reported to be in preparation in 2026 |
What Support Do the Corridors Offer?
- Defence Testing Infrastructure Scheme: a scheme launched in 2020 with an outlay of about Rs 400 crore to set up common test facilities in the two corridors, with support of up to 75 percent to special purpose vehicles that include private firms
- Common facilities: shared testing, design and certification centres help small firms that cannot afford their own
- State policies: Uttar Pradesh and Tamil Nadu have defence and aerospace policies with capital subsidy, stamp duty and power concessions
- Single window: investor cells and nodal officers aim to give quick clearances
- Anchor units: public sector units and large private firms are expected to anchor suppliers in each node
What Else Should You Remember?
- Reason for corridors: the idea is that a cluster lowers costs and lets suppliers, testing labs and anchor firms grow together
- Sectors: missiles, ammunition, aircraft parts, drones, electronics, armoured vehicle parts and naval items are targeted
- Gap in numbers: grounded investment is a small part of commitments, which is the main theme in recent reports
- UP issues: uneven progress between nodes, with delays reported in some Bundelkhand and eastern nodes
- Tamil Nadu issues: implementation gaps in a Coimbatore park were reported, and node lists differ between sources
- State goals: Uttar Pradesh set a goal in 2026 to triple defence and aerospace investment, as reported
- Link to indigenisation: corridors serve the production goals in Defence Indigenization and Atmanirbhar Bharat in Defence Production
- Link to start-ups: small firms and start-ups from Innovation for Defence Excellence (iDEX) Scheme can use common test facilities
- Link to chips: electronics clusters and chip plants described in Semiconductor Fabrication Plants and India’s Chip Manufacturing Push (Dholera, Sanand) can feed defence supply chains
- Criticism: private investment has been slower than hoped, land acquisition and utilities take time, and defence orders are uneven
Why Does It Matter for the Exam?
- Locations: which states and which nodes belong to each corridor
- Budget year: announced in the Union Budget 2018-19
- Scheme: Defence Testing Infrastructure Scheme and its support share
- Ministry: Defence Production, not the Ministry of Commerce
- Common errors: adding Gujarat or Maharashtra as a corridor, or mixing the corridors with the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor
As an analytical point, a corridor succeeds only with orders. Land and subsidies bring firms to the gate, but steady domestic and export demand, quick payments and test facilities keep them there.
Why Is This Topic Important?
- Locations States and nodes
- Support Testing and subsidies
- Gap Commitments versus investment
