What Else Should You Remember?
- Housing for All: The mission sets the goal of a pucca house with basic services for every eligible family
- Women ownership: Houses are allotted in the name of the woman or jointly, which improves her property rights
- Geo-tagging: Rural houses are geo-tagged at stages, and payment is made through Direct Benefit Transfer to the bank account
- Wage support: A rural beneficiary gets 90 or 95 person-days of unskilled wage under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act for building the house
- Toilet support: Rs 12,000 is available for a toilet under the Swachh Bharat Mission through convergence
- Interest subsidy: The Credit Linked Subsidy Scheme of the first urban phase gave an interest subsidy for home loans of middle income groups, and a new interest subsidy vertical continues in 2.0
- Affordable rental housing: A vertical to give rental homes to migrants, workers and students by converting idle Government housing
- Technology: Light House Projects built with new construction technology were taken up in six cities
- Concerns: Delay in land, beneficiary share not affordable for the poorest, quality of houses, and slow urban uptake of affordable rental housing
- Exam trap: The rural scheme is not run by the urban ministry and the Rs 1.20 lakh unit assistance applies only in plains
- Way forward: Land titles, easy credit for poor households, quality checks and climate-resilient designs
Why Does It Matter for the Exam?
- Ministries: MoHUA for urban and MoRD for rural
- Dates: 25 June 2015, 20 November 2016 and 1 September 2024
- Rural assistance: Rs 1.20 lakh and Rs 1.30 lakh
- Predecessor: Indira Awaas Yojana for the rural arm
- Common errors: Mixing the launch dates or the unit assistance
As an analytical point, housing for the poor needs land, finance and services together. Counting completed houses is not enough, and quality, occupancy and access to water and sanitation should be assessed in the same survey.
