How Is NVLI Different From Other Digital Libraries?

  • NVLI versus NDLI: NVLI focuses on culture and heritage and is under the Ministry of Culture, while the National Digital Library of India (NDLI) serves learners across subjects, is under the Ministry of Education, and is built at IIT Kharagpur
  • NVLI versus National Mission on Manuscripts: the manuscript mission records and digitises manuscripts, while NVLI is a wider portal
  • Open access: the library aims at open access to cultural resources, as in the digital resources of museums and archives
  • Indian Culture Portal: it presents NVLI content as galleries, stories, e-books, archives and museum objects
  • Library support: the Raja Ram Mohan Roy Library Foundation in Kolkata, set up in 1972, supports public libraries under the Ministry of Culture
  • National libraries: the National Library in Kolkata and the Delhi Public Library are national and metro libraries linked to this effort
  • Language reach: the portal offers content in multiple Indian languages
  • Funding: budget figures for NVLI vary in sources, so they should be taken from the latest Ministry of Culture document
  • Link: it is part of digital India efforts for culture and education

What Else Should You Remember?

  • Why needed: cultural material is spread over many museums, archives and libraries, and a single search helps students and researchers
  • Data standards: NVLI uses metadata standards so that items from different sources can be searched together
  • Link to museums: museum collections described in Museums of India (National Museum, Indian Museum Kolkata, Salar Jung Museum) feed this platform
  • Link to NMMA: data from the National Mission on Monuments and Antiquities is also used
  • Audiovisual: the National Cultural Audiovisual Archive keeps recordings of performing arts
  • Users: students, teachers, researchers and the public
  • Challenges: copyright rules, poor metadata in old records, and limited internet access in some regions
  • Mission period: the National Mission on Libraries was approved for a multi-year period and has been extended, so its current phase should be checked
  • Digital divide: rural libraries need devices and training to use such portals
  • Content types: the Indian Culture Portal holds archival documents, rare books, photographs, audio and video recordings, 3D museum objects, virtual tours of monuments and stories on festivals and crafts
  • Model libraries: another NML component sets up model libraries at the state and district level, so that public libraries have better buildings, books and digital access
  • Library survey: the mission also surveys libraries across India to learn how many exist, what they hold and how they are run, so that reform can rest on data
  • Teaching use: school and college teachers can use the galleries and timelines to prepare lessons on history, art and literature
  • Preservation: digital copies cannot replace care of originals

Why Does It Matter for the Exam?

  1. Ministry and parent: Ministry of Culture and National Mission on Libraries
  2. Developer: IIT Bombay
  3. Contrast: NVLI versus NDLI
  4. Portal: Indian Culture Portal
  5. Common error: saying that NVLI is run by the Ministry of Education
