VSAT, SIM, IMEI and WiMax Technologies

Science & Technology › IT, Telecommunications and Computers · Topic 14.21

VSAT, SIM, IMEI and WiMax are four communication technologies often asked together. A VSAT, Very Small Aperture Terminal, is a small satellite dish station that links remote places to a hub through a geostationary satellite for data, voice and video. A SIM, Subscriber Identity Module, is a small smart card that stores the subscriber identity and keys used to connect a phone to a mobile network. An IMEI, International Mobile Equipment Identity, is a unique 15-digit number that identifies a mobile device itself and not the subscriber. WiMAX, Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a wireless broadband standard based on IEEE 802.16 that was meant to give wide area internet over many kilometres.

Where Does It Fit?

This topic follows the account of supercomputers. It returns to communication technology and explains four terms that link satellites, mobile phones and wireless broadband, which are needed for the topics on mobile spectrum and networking. Previous topic: Supercomputers and Their Applications. Next topic: Smartphone Technology and Related Concepts.

What Are VSAT, SIM, IMEI and WiMAX?

Technology Key features
VSAT A small antenna, usually 0.75 to 2.4 metres wide, connects to a hub through a geostationary satellite. Used in remote banking, ATMs, railways, oil rigs, disaster communication and rural links
SIM A smart card that holds the International Mobile Subscriber Identity, an authentication key and sometimes contacts. It lets the network identify and bill the subscriber and can be moved between phones
IMEI A 15-digit number of a handset, found by dialling *#06#. Each phone slot has its own number. It helps to trace and block stolen phones
WiMAX A wireless metropolitan area network standard, IEEE 802.16, offering broadband over several kilometres. Fixed and mobile versions existed
eSIM An embedded SIM built into the device and programmed with a profile remotely, so no physical card is needed
Difference of SIM and IMEI SIM identifies the subscriber, IMEI identifies the device
Spectrum use VSAT uses satellite bands such as C, Ku and Ka, while WiMAX used bands such as 2.3, 2.5 and 3.5 GHz

How Are These Technologies Used and Regulated in India?

  • VSAT in India: used by banks, the Railways, the National Informatics Centre, oil companies and for disaster response and tele-education in remote areas. Operators need a licence from the Department of Telecommunications
  • Satellite broadband: satellite communication services are given by authorisation under the Telecommunications Act, 2023, with spectrum assigned administratively and not by auction
  • IMEI integrity: tampering with an IMEI is an offence in India under the Telecommunications Act, 2023
  • CEIR: the Central Equipment Identity Register, set up by the Department of Telecommunications, stores IMEI numbers so that lost or stolen phones can be blocked across all networks
  • Sanchar Saathi: a portal and mobile app launched in 2023 to block lost phones, check the mobile connections taken in one’s name and report fraud
  • SIM verification: SIMs are issued after identity verification, and bulk and fake connections have been cracked down on
  • SIM swap fraud: criminals get a duplicate SIM to receive bank one-time passwords, so users should be careful about sudden loss of network
  • WiMAX in India: Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited and a few private firms offered WiMAX after the 2010 broadband wireless access auction, but LTE soon replaced it

What Else Should You Remember?

  • Geostationary orbit: about 35,786 kilometres above the equator, where a satellite stays above the same point, which suits VSAT
  • Hub and star network: VSAT sites usually talk to a central hub, which is a star pattern
  • GSM and CDMA: GSM phones use SIM cards, while older CDMA phones in India often used identity inside the handset
  • Types of SIM: standard, micro, nano and embedded forms, differing in size
  • Dual SIM: phones with two SIM slots, each with its own IMEI
  • PIN and PUK: a PIN protects the SIM and a PUK unlocks it after wrong attempts
  • IMSI: International Mobile Subscriber Identity, the number inside a SIM that identifies the subscriber on the network
  • WiMAX versus Wi-Fi: Wi-Fi covers a room or building, WiMAX was designed to cover a city
  • WiMAX decline: LTE became the main 4G standard and WiMAX faded globally
  • ISRO and VSAT: Indian satellites in the INSAT and GSAT series carry transponders used by VSAT networks
  • GSAT-N2 and high throughput satellites: Ka band satellites such as GSAT-11 and GSAT-29 provide high speed links for remote areas
  • Low earth orbit broadband: constellations of satellites, as in Satellite Communication, offer low delay internet and are being licensed in India
  • BharatNet link: VSAT and satellite links help where optical fibre of BharatNet cannot reach, as in NOFN and Spectrum
  • Call data and location: networks can know the approximate location of a SIM and device, so law enforcement uses these records under legal procedure
  • Mobile number portability: since 2011 a subscriber can change operator and keep the same number
  • Privacy: access to SIM and IMEI records is regulated, as in Cyber Law in India
  • Link: generations of mobile systems are in Mobile Generations

Why Does It Matter for the Exam?

  1. Full forms: VSAT, SIM, IMEI, WiMAX
  2. Identity: SIM for subscriber and IMEI for device
  3. Standards: WiMAX is IEEE 802.16
  4. Current affairs link: Sanchar Saathi, satellite internet and eSIM
  5. Common errors: saying IMEI is on the SIM or that WiMAX is the same as Wi-Fi

As an analytical point, VSAT gives coverage where fibre and towers cannot reach, while SIM and IMEI systems support security and consumer protection. Technologies that fail to win scale, like WiMAX, show the importance of standards and ecosystems.

Why Is This Topic Important?

Frequently Asked Questions

What is VSAT?

VSAT, or Very Small Aperture Terminal, is a small satellite earth station with an antenna usually under three metres wide that exchanges data, voice or video with a central hub through a geostationary satellite. It is used for banking networks, ATMs, railways, oil rigs and remote villages where cables and towers are not available.

What is the difference between SIM and IMEI?

A SIM, or Subscriber Identity Module, is a card that identifies the subscriber to the mobile network and can be moved from phone to phone. The IMEI is a unique 15-digit number of the handset itself. Blocking an IMEI makes a stolen phone unusable, even if the thief inserts a new SIM.

What is WiMAX?

WiMAX, Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access, is a wireless broadband technology based on the IEEE 802.16 standard that can cover areas of several kilometres. It was offered in India and elsewhere in the late 2000s but was largely replaced by LTE, the 4G standard supported by most mobile operators.

What is the Central Equipment Identity Register?

The Central Equipment Identity Register, CEIR, is a system run by the Department of Telecommunications that keeps the IMEI numbers of mobile phones. When a phone is reported lost or stolen, its IMEI is blacklisted so that it cannot work on any Indian network, and the system also helps to find cloned or duplicate IMEI numbers.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM, or embedded SIM, is a SIM chip soldered inside a device which can be programmed with the subscriber's profile remotely, so no plastic card is needed. It allows easy change of operator and use of several numbers, and is common in newer smartphones and smartwatches.
