Stealth Technology

Science & Technology › Defence Technology and Missile Systems · Topic 16.8

Stealth technology, also called low observable technology, is a set of design methods that make an aircraft, ship, submarine or missile difficult to detect by radar, infrared, sound, visual and other sensors. Radar cross section, RCS, the size a target appears on radar, is reduced by shaping, using flat angled surfaces and edges that scatter radar waves away from the source, by radar absorbent materials and coatings, by hiding engines and weapons inside the body, and by curved air intakes. Infrared signature is cut by mixing hot exhaust with cool air and by special paints. Famous stealth aircraft include the American B-2 Spirit, F-22 Raptor and F-35, Russia's Su-57 and China's J-20. India plans the Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft, AMCA, as its fifth generation stealth fighter.

Where Does It Fit?

This topic follows the account of drones. It explains how forces try to avoid detection, which links with the later topics on air defence systems and naval platforms. Previous topic: Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and Drone Technology. Next topic: Weapons of Mass Destruction: Nuclear, Chemical and Biological Weapons.

How Does Stealth Technology Work?

Method Explanation
Radar cross section RCS is the apparent size of a target on radar. A large fighter has an RCS of several square metres, while a stealth aircraft may look like a small bird or insect
Shaping Angled flat panels and rounded edges reflect radar waves away from the transmitter instead of back to it. Edges of doors and panels are aligned
Radar absorbent material Coatings with ferrite or carbon compounds, and composite structures, absorb radar energy and turn it to heat
Internal weapons bays Missiles and bombs are carried inside, because outside stores reflect radar
Engine concealment S-shaped air intakes hide the engine fan blades, which reflect strongly. Exhaust is shaped and cooled
Infrared reduction Cooling of the exhaust and special coatings reduce heat seen by infrared seekers
Emission control Limiting radio and radar transmissions that give away position

Which Stealth Platforms Exist and What Is India’s Position?

  • Aircraft: B-2 Spirit stealth bomber, F-117 (retired), F-22 Raptor, F-35 Lightning II, Russia’s Su-57 and China’s J-20 and J-35
  • Fifth generation: stealth, supercruise, sensor fusion and advanced avionics
  • AMCA: India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft, a twin-engine fifth generation stealth fighter designed by the Aeronautical Development Agency. The Government approved the programme and an execution model with industry in 2024 to 2025, with first flight expected late in the decade. Check the latest
  • Ghatak: a planned stealthy unmanned combat aircraft of DRDO
  • Stealth ships: Indian Navy’s Shivalik class frigates (Project 17), Kolkata class destroyers and Nilgiri class frigates have reduced radar, infrared and acoustic signatures
  • Submarines: rely on quieting of machinery, rubber tiles and shapes to reduce sound
  • Missiles: cruise missiles like the Nirbhay use low radar signature designs
  • Cost and limits: stealth is expensive, needs maintenance of coatings, and works best against certain radar frequencies

What Else Should You Remember?

  • Low frequency radar: long wave radars can detect stealth aircraft, but with less accuracy
  • Passive detection: sensors that listen for emissions, not send radar waves
  • Quantum radar: a research idea to detect stealth targets, as in Quantum Computing
  • Multistatic radar: several transmitters and receivers can see aircraft from the side
  • Infrared search and track: detects the heat of aircraft without radar
  • Acoustic stealth: submarines minimise noise from propellers and engines
  • Magnetic signature: degaussing reduces the magnetism of ships to avoid mines
  • Visual stealth: camouflage paint and lights
  • Spirit of the B-2: flying wing design with a very low RCS
  • Operation Neptune Spear: a stealth modified helicopter was used in the 2011 raid on Osama bin Laden
  • F-117 shootdown: one was shot down over Serbia in 1999, showing limits
  • India’s fifth generation options: India has also looked at buying foreign stealth fighters, but no deal had been confirmed; the status should be checked
  • Engine for AMCA: a deal with a foreign firm to co-develop a more powerful engine is under discussion
  • Materials: composite materials and carbon fibre are used to reduce weight and radar reflection
  • Mission Mode: defence start-ups also work on radar absorbing materials
  • Link to ships: ship classes are in Naval Platforms: Submarines, Aircraft Carriers, Destroyers, Frigates
  • Link to fighter jets: fighter programme is in Kaveri failed)…">Light Combat Aircraft
  • Infrared signature note: an infrared signature is the heat given off by engines and hot skin, which heat-seeking missiles follow

Why Does It Matter for the Exam?

  1. Principle: reduce RCS
  2. Methods: shape, absorbent materials, internal bays
  3. Platforms: F-22, F-35, Su-57, J-20, AMCA
  4. Current affairs link: AMCA engine and execution model
  5. Common errors: saying stealth makes an aircraft invisible to all sensors

As an analytical point, stealth gives an advantage in penetrating air defences, but it is costly and not total invisibility. A balanced force combines stealth with electronic warfare, long range missiles and strong air defence.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is stealth technology?

Stealth technology is a collection of design methods that make aircraft, ships, submarines and missiles hard to detect by radar, infrared, sound and sight. It works mainly by reducing the radar cross section through shaping, radar absorbent materials and hiding weapons and engines inside the body.

What is radar cross section?

Radar cross section, RCS, measures how detectable an object is by radar, as the area of an ideal reflector that would send back the same signal. A stealth aircraft is designed with an RCS of a fraction of a square metre, so radars see it only at very short range.

Is a stealth aircraft invisible?

No. Stealth only reduces the distance at which an aircraft can be detected and tracked. Low frequency radars, networked sensors, infrared search systems and passive detection can still find it, although with less accuracy, so stealth works best with electronic warfare and good tactics.

What is the AMCA?

The Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft is India's planned fifth generation, twin-engine stealth fighter, being designed by the Aeronautical Development Agency. It is meant to have internal weapons bays, advanced sensors and supercruise, and is expected to enter service in the 2030s, subject to development progress.

Which Indian ships have stealth features?

The Navy's Shivalik class frigates of Project 17 were the first Indian ships designed with stealth features such as sloped surfaces and reduced radar and infrared signatures. Later classes, including Kolkata class destroyers, Visakhapatnam class destroyers and Nilgiri class frigates, also have reduced signatures.
