Why Does It Matter for the Exam?
- Years and bodies: TRAI 1997, TDSAT 2000, MeitY 2016
- Who does what: DoT versus MeitY
- Laws: IT Act 2000 and Telecommunications Act 2023
- Current affairs link: new rules under the 2023 Act
- Common errors: giving TRAI licensing powers or placing MeitY under the Ministry of Communications
As an analytical point, India divides telecom and IT between two ministries, with an independent regulator and tribunal. Convergence of services, from broadband to broadcasting, makes coordination between them a central concern.
