Where Does It Fit?

This is the last topic of the macro on India’s location, geology and the Himalayas. The previous topic covered the valleys and glaciers, and this one lists the gaps through the mountain wall. The next macro covers the plains, plateau, coasts and islands, beginning with the Indo-Gangetic-Brahmaputra plain. Previous topic: Himalayan Valleys, Snowline and Glaciers. Next topic: Indo-Gangetic-Brahmaputra Plain.

What Are Himalayan Passes and Why Do They Matter?

In short: a pass is a low point on a ridge, and in the Himalayas it is the only way for roads, trade and pilgrims to cross.

The Himalayas are a barrier for movement as well as for the monsoon, as in Himalayan Ranges – Shiwaliks, Lesser, Greater and Trans-Himalaya. A pass is a natural gap or a saddle in a mountain range, normally at the head of a river valley. Passes in the Greater Himalaya are often above 4,500 m and are snowbound for much of the year, so most of them are open for only a few months, from about May to October. Their importance is strategic, because they decide the lines of defence and the routes of invasion; economic, because they carry the border trade and the road network; and cultural, because they carry pilgrimage routes. Tunnels now bypass several of the passes to allow year-round movement.

Which Are the Important Passes of the Western Himalaya?

Pass State or region Connects and notes
Banihal Pass Jammu and Kashmir (Pir Panjal range) Jammu with the Kashmir valley, at about 2,830 m; the Jawahar Tunnel (1956) takes the road below the pass, and the Banihal–Qazigund railway tunnel opened in 2013
Zoji La Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh Srinagar with Kargil and Leh on the national highway; closed from about December to May; the Zojila tunnel, 13.15 km, is being built to give all-weather access, and its completion has been pushed to 2028
Khardung La Ladakh Near Leh in the Ladakh range, about 5,600 m; one of the highest motorable roads in the world; leads to the Nubra valley
Chang La Ladakh About 5,360 m; links Leh with the Pangong Tso region
Rohtang Pass Himachal Pradesh Links the Kullu valley with Lahaul and Spiti, at about 3,980 m; the 9-km Atal Tunnel, opened in 2020, now gives all-weather access
Bara Lacha La Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh About 4,890 m, on the Manali–Leh highway
Shipki La Himachal Pradesh On the border with Tibet, on the Sutlej route; the Hindustan–Tibet road

Which Are the Passes of the Central and Eastern Himalaya?

Pass State Connects and notes
Lipulekh Uttarakhand Tri-junction of India, Tibet and Nepal; route of the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and an old trade route
Niti and Mana Uttarakhand Garhwal to Tibet; Mana lies near Badrinath
Mangsha Dhura Uttarakhand Pilgrim route to Kailash-Mansarovar
Nathu La Sikkim Sikkim with Tibet at about 4,310 m, part of an old branch of the Silk Route; closed after the 1962 war and reopened for trade in 2006
Jelep La Sikkim Sikkim with Tibet via the Chumbi valley, linking Kalimpong with Lhasa
Bum La, Sela and Bomdi La Arunachal Pradesh Tawang and West Kameng region; the Sela Tunnel, opened in 2024, gives all-weather access to Tawang

The passes have regained importance in recent years. Border trade between India and China through Nathu La, Shipki La and Lipulekh, which had stopped in 2020, resumed on 1 August 2026, with seasonal trade lasting until the passes close in November. Nepal has objected to the use of Lipulekh, citing its own claim to the area. The Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, which is organised by the Ministry of External Affairs each summer, ran in 2026 through two routes, Lipulekh in Uttarakhand and Nathu La in Sikkim.

How Do You Study the Passes?

  • By state: group each pass under Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal, Uttarakhand, Sikkim and Arunachal Pradesh, since the questions give the state and ask for the pass.
  • By the neighbour: Shipki La, Lipulekh, Niti, Mana, Nathu La, Jelep La and Bum La lead to Tibet in China, and the passes of the Pir Panjal connect valleys within India.
  • By function: road passes (Zoji La, Rohtang, Bara Lacha La), trade passes (Nathu La, Shipki La, Lipulekh) and pilgrimage passes (Lipulekh, Nathu La, Mangsha Dhura).

As an analytical point, the tunnels such as the Atal and Sela, and the planned Zojila, are converting the seasonal gaps into permanent links, which improves the defence logistics and the economy of the hill regions, but also brings more traffic, construction and waste to a fragile environment. They need to be assessed along with the risk of landslides and the glacier hazards discussed in Himalayan Valleys, Snowline and Glaciers.
