Iron Ore – Types and Distribution

Geography › Mineral and Energy Resources · Topic 21.1

Iron ore is the most important metallic mineral, the base of the steel industry. Its main types are magnetite, with up to 72 per cent iron, and haematite, with 60 to 70 per cent, which are the good ores, and limonite and siderite, which are inferior. Australia, Brazil, China and India are the largest producers. In India, haematite is found mainly in Odisha, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh and magnetite in Karnataka, and production has risen to about 290 to 310 million tonnes a year.

Where Does It Fit?

This is the first topic of the macro on mineral and energy resources, the last macro of the subject. The previous macro described the steel industry, and this one begins with its main raw material, iron ore. The next topic covers coal. Previous topic: Distribution of the Iron and Steel Industry. Next topic: Coal – Formation, Classification and Distribution.

What Are the Types of Iron Ore?

Ore Formula and iron content Features
Magnetite Fe3O4; up to about 72 per cent Black, strongly magnetic; the best quality, but found in low concentrations, so it needs beneficiation; low-grade magnetite of 25 to 30 per cent is taconite; naturally magnetised magnetite is lodestone
Haematite Fe2O3; 60 to 70 per cent Reddish; can be used in steel production without beneficiation; the most abundant ore in India
Limonite 40 to 60 per cent Yellowish, inferior, hydrated; open-cast mining is easy and cheap
Siderite FeCO3; below 40 per cent Iron carbonate with impurities; free of sulphur and phosphorus and self-fluxing because of lime; often uneconomic

Iron ore is smelted with coking coal and limestone to make iron and steel, as in Iron and Steel Industry – Process and Location Factors. Ores with lower iron content must be crushed and concentrated by beneficiation and then made into pellets or sinter.

Where Is Iron Ore Found in the World?

  • Producers: Australia is the largest producer, with the Pilbara region, followed by Brazil with Carajas and Minas Gerais (Itabira), China and India; most Australian and Brazilian ore is exported to China.
  • Reserves: Australia, Brazil, Russia, China and India hold the largest reserves.
  • Other regions: the Mesabi range of the Great Lakes and Labrador in North America; Krivoy Rog in Ukraine, the Ural region and Magnitogorsk in Russia and Kazakhstan; Kiruna in Sweden; Lorraine in France; Transvaal in South Africa and Liberia.

The trade in iron ore is one of the largest in bulk shipping, with Australia and Brazil sending ore to China, Japan and South Korea, as in Ports as Gateways of International Trade.

Where Is Iron Ore Found in India?

State Details
Odisha The largest producer, with about half of India’s output and about a third of haematite reserves; the Barbil–Koira valley in Keonjhar and Sundargarh, Mayurbhanj, Joda and Noamundi belt
Jharkhand About a quarter of haematite reserves; Singhbhum, with the first mine at Gua in 1904 and the rich Noamundi mines; supplies Tata Steel at Jamshedpur
Chhattisgarh Bastar district, with the Bailadila range, whose Kirandul mines are among the largest mechanised mines in Asia; ore goes by a slurry pipeline to Visakhapatnam, whose high-grade ore is exported to Japan; Dalli-Rajhara supplies Bhilai
Karnataka The Bellary–Hospet–Sandur belt for haematite, and magnetite in the Bababudan hills, Kemmangundi and Kudremukh, with about 73 per cent of the magnetite; Kudremukh is in the ecologically fragile Western Ghats
Goa Haematite and limonite; mining was banned by the Supreme Court in 2012 over illegalities and resumed after new leases in later years; exports from Mormugao
Others Andhra Pradesh (Rayalaseema), Maharashtra (Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Chandrapur), Rajasthan and Tamil Nadu (Salem)

India’s resources of haematite are about 22 billion tonnes and of magnetite about 10 billion tonnes, but most of the high-grade reserve has been used for decades, so there is growing use of low-grade ore through beneficiation and pellet plants. Production was about 289 million tonnes in 2024–25, after a fall during the court bans on illegal mining in Karnataka, Goa and Odisha in 2010 to 2014, and early estimates for 2025–26 are about 305 to 310 million tonnes. NMDC, a public sector company, is the largest producer, and several private firms produce large amounts, mostly in Odisha. India is both an exporter of high-grade ore and a rising importer of ore for its blast furnaces, as in Distribution of the Iron and Steel Industry. As an analytical point, the steel target of 300 million tonnes by 2030 requires about 500 million tonnes of ore, so the long-run needs of ore are high, and mining must be planned with the interests of the forest-dwelling communities of Odisha, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh, as in Mining and Quarrying.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the types of iron ore?

The main types of iron ore are magnetite, with up to 72 per cent iron, haematite with 60 to 70 per cent iron, limonite with 40 to 60 per cent and siderite with less than 40 per cent. Magnetite and haematite are the good ores, and haematite is the most important in India.

Which Indian state produces the most iron ore?

Odisha is the largest producer of iron ore in India, contributing about half of the national output, mainly from the Keonjhar, Sundargarh and Mayurbhanj districts. Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka and Goa are the other major producers.

What is the Bailadila mine?

The Bailadila range in Bastar district of Chhattisgarh has some of the richest haematite deposits in India. Its mines at Kirandul and Bacheli are among the largest mechanised iron ore mines in Asia, and the ore is sent by a slurry pipeline to Visakhapatnam for steelmaking and for export to Japan.

Why is magnetite ore of Karnataka not widely mined?

Most of India's magnetite is found in the Western Ghats region of Karnataka, such as the Kudremukh and Bababudan hills, which are ecologically fragile. Magnetite also needs beneficiation as it occurs in low concentrations, so a large part of the resource remains unused for environmental and technical reasons.

Which countries are the largest producers of iron ore?

Australia is the largest producer of iron ore, followed by Brazil, China and India. Most of the ore from Australia and Brazil is exported to China, which has a very high demand for steel but lower-grade domestic ore.
