India as a Geographical Unit and Its Frontiers

Geography › India: Location, Geology and the Himalayas · Topic 13.1

India lies wholly in the northern and eastern hemispheres, between about 8 degrees 4 minutes and 37 degrees 6 minutes north and 68 degrees 7 minutes and 97 degrees 25 minutes east, with an area of 3.28 million square kilometres, the seventh largest in the world. The Tropic of Cancer divides it into two halves, it has a land border of about 15,107 km with seven countries and a coastline of 7,516.6 km.

Where Does It Fit?

This is the first topic of the macro on India’s location, geology and the Himalayas. The previous macro ended with the law of the sea, and this one begins the study of India itself. The next topic covers the major physical divisions of India. Previous topic: UNCLOS, Territorial Waters and Exclusive Economic Zone. Next topic: Major Physical Divisions of India.

What Is India’s Location and Extent?

In short: India is a large, mostly tropical peninsula country in South Asia, shut off from the rest of Asia by the Himalayas and opening out to the Indian Ocean.

Feature Detail
Latitudinal extent The mainland extends from about 8 degrees 4 minutes north to 37 degrees 6 minutes north, a span of about 29 degrees; with the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the southern limit goes to 6 degrees 45 minutes north
Longitudinal extent About 68 degrees 7 minutes east to 97 degrees 25 minutes east, a span of about 30 degrees
North-south length About 3,214 km
East-west width About 2,933 km, from the Rann of Kutch to Arunachal Pradesh
Southernmost point Indira Point, also called Pygmalion Point, in Great Nicobar, at 6 degrees 45 minutes north; the southern tip of the mainland is Kanyakumari
Area 3,287,263 sq km, about 2.4 per cent of the world’s area, seventh largest after Russia, Canada, the United States, China, Brazil and Australia

The Tropic of Cancer, at 23 and a half degrees north, passes through the middle of the country and through eight states: Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura and Mizoram. Because the area north of it is nearly twice as large as the area to the south, India lies half in the tropics and half in the subtropics. Yet it is treated as a tropical country, because the Himalayas block the cold continental air from Central Asia, the climate is dominated by the tropical monsoon, and the crops, settlements and diseases are tropical, as in Mechanism of the Indian Monsoon.

The 82 and a half degrees east meridian, which passes near Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh, is the Standard Meridian. Indian Standard Time is 5 hours 30 minutes ahead of Greenwich Mean Time, as in Longitudes, Meridians and Time Zones. Since the longitudinal extent is about 30 degrees, the local time of the far east and the far west differs by almost 2 hours, so the sun rises in Arunachal Pradesh about two hours before it does in Gujarat. Debates on a second time zone for the north-east keep coming up, but India has retained a single time zone.

Why Is India Called a Geographical Unit?

The Himalayas in the north and the Indian Ocean in the south, east and west separate India from the rest of Asia, and make the subcontinent a distinct unit with a common climate, the monsoon, a shared drainage and common cultural patterns. Its central position in the Indian Ocean, with the sea route from West Asia and Africa to East Asia passing south of the peninsula, gives it great strategic importance, as in The Indian Ocean. The Deccan plateau projects into the sea, and the Palk Strait separates it from Sri Lanka by only about 32 km at the closest point, between Dhanushkodi and Talaimannar. The Indira Point is about 150 km from the northern tip of Sumatra in Indonesia. This is why India has maritime neighbours as well as land neighbours.

What Are India’s Frontiers?

Neighbour Land boundary (km) Notes
Bangladesh 4,096.7 The longest; follows the Radcliffe Award of 1947; the Land Boundary Agreement of 2015 exchanged enclaves; the maritime boundary was settled in 2014
China 3,488 The second longest; three sectors, western, middle and eastern; the eastern sector follows the McMahon Line of 1914 as India sees it; alignment in some sectors is not settled by agreement, and the boundary is called the Line of Actual Control in places
Pakistan 3,323 Result of the Partition and the Radcliffe Award, with the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir; Sir Creek in Kutch is an unresolved issue
Nepal 1,751 Open border along the Shiwalik foothills in the east-west direction; touches Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, West Bengal and Sikkim
Myanmar 1,643 Follows the watershed between the Brahmaputra and Irrawaddy; touches Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram
Bhutan 699 Touches Sikkim, West Bengal, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh
Afghanistan 106 The shortest, as listed by the Ministry of Home Affairs

The total land boundary is 15,106.7 km, touching 17 states and Union Territories, and the coastline is 7,516.6 km, made up of 6,100 km of mainland coast and the coast of the islands, touching 13 states and Union Territories. Of the states, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Delhi and Haryana have neither an international border nor a coast. By sea, India’s neighbours are Sri Lanka, the Maldives and Indonesia. The boundaries of Pakistan and Bangladesh have been drawn on the plains, without natural features, and so they cut across rivers, farms and villages, which makes border management more difficult than on a mountain frontier. The Himalayan frontier is hard to patrol because of the high altitude, and infrastructure has been expanded in recent years with the Atal Tunnel under the Rohtang Pass, opened in 2020, and the Sela Tunnel in Arunachal Pradesh, opened in 2024. As an analytical point, India’s geography is both an asset and a challenge: it provides a secure natural frontier in the north and a long coastline for trade, but also requires the management of more than one type of frontier at once.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the latitudinal and longitudinal extent of India?

India extends from about 8 degrees 4 minutes north to 37 degrees 6 minutes north in latitude, and from about 68 degrees 7 minutes east to 97 degrees 25 minutes east in longitude. With the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the southern limit reaches 6 degrees 45 minutes north at Indira Point.

Which states does the Tropic of Cancer pass through?

The Tropic of Cancer passes through eight Indian states: Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tripura and Mizoram. It divides India into two nearly equal latitudinal halves, though the area north of it is almost twice as large as the area to the south.

What is the length of India's land border and coastline?

According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, India's land border is 15,106.7 kilometres long, passing through 17 states and Union Territories, and the coastline is 7,516.6 kilometres, including the mainland coast of about 6,100 kilometres and the coast of the islands, touching 13 states and Union Territories.

Which country has the longest border with India?

Bangladesh has the longest border with India, at 4,096.7 kilometres, followed by China at 3,488, Pakistan at 3,323, Nepal at 1,751, Myanmar at 1,643, Bhutan at 699 and Afghanistan at 106 kilometres, as listed by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

Why is India considered a tropical country even though half of it lies north of the Tropic of Cancer?

India is treated as tropical because the Himalayas block the cold air from Central Asia, the monsoon dominates its climate, and its crops, settlements and diseases are tropical. Winter days are also warm due to clear skies and strong insolation, even where nights are cool.
