Automobile, Railway Car, Locomotive, Shipbuilding and Aircraft Industries
Geography › Industry · Topic 13.4
Automobile, railway car, locomotive, shipbuilding and aircraft industries make the vehicles that move people and goods on road, rail, water and air. They are assembly industries that combine thousands of parts, mostly of steel, aluminium and electronics, and they create large numbers of jobs. The auto industry is the biggest of the group, and Asia now leads world output.

Where Does It Fit?
This topic follows engineering industries and takes the assembly industries that use machines and steel to make vehicles. It links to the transport networks described in the macro on transport and communication. Previous topic: Engineering Industries: Machine Tools, Industrial Machinery, Agricultural Machinery. Next topic: Chemical Industry: Classes and the Heavy Chemical Industry.
How Is the Automobile Industry Spread?
- Nature: vehicles are assembled from parts made by many suppliers, so assembly plants cluster with component makers. The industry needs steel, rubber, glass, electronics, a skilled labour force and a large market.
- World pattern: Detroit in the United States was the early world centre. Wolfsburg and Stuttgart in Germany, Turin in Italy, Toyota City in Japan and Ulsan in South Korea followed. China has been the largest producer of vehicles since 2009, and Japan, Germany, India, South Korea and the United States are also large producers. Check the latest ranks.
- India: the main hubs are Chennai-Hosur-Oragadam (called the Detroit of India), Pune-Chakan, Gurugram-Manesar, Sanand-Ahmedabad, Bengaluru and Kolkata. India is among the largest producers of two-wheelers, three-wheelers and tractors, and one of the larger producers of cars and commercial vehicles.
- Trends: electric vehicles are changing the industry and the Production Linked Incentive scheme for automobiles and auto components was approved in 2021. Exports go to Africa, Latin America and Europe.
How Are Railway Cars and Locomotives Made in India?
| Unit | Location | Product |
|---|---|---|
| Chittaranjan Locomotive Works | Chittaranjan, West Bengal (1950) | Electric locomotives; first steam locomotives |
| Diesel Locomotive Works | Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh (1961) | Diesel locomotives, and now electric conversions |
| Integral Coach Factory | Perambur, Chennai (1955) | Passenger coaches; Vande Bharat and other trains |
| Rail Coach Factory | Kapurthala, Punjab (1986) | Coaches, including LHB types |
| Modern Coach Factory | Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh | Coaches and metro cars |
| Diesel Loco Modernisation Works | Patiala, Punjab | Rebuilding and upgrading |
Private firms also make metro coaches and wagons. The Indian Railways network, described in Land Transport: Railway Networks and Their Distribution, is the main buyer, so production follows its plans for electrification and new train sets. India exports locomotives and coaches to several countries.
Where Are Ships and Aircraft Made?
- Shipbuilding world pattern: South Korea, China and Japan now build most of the world’s ships. They have large steel industries, skilled labour, big ports and state support. Europe builds mainly cruise ships and naval vessels.
- Indian shipyards: Cochin Shipyard (Kochi), Mazagon Dock (Mumbai), Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (Kolkata), Hindustan Shipyard (Visakhapatnam) and Goa Shipyard. The aircraft carrier INS Vikrant was built at Cochin Shipyard and commissioned in 2022. Ports and shipping are covered in Major Sea Ports of India (Major and Non-Major Ports).
- Aircraft world pattern: Boeing at Seattle in the United States and Airbus at Toulouse in France lead civil aircraft. Russia, China, Brazil (Embraer) and Canada are other makers. Engines are made by firms in the United States, the United Kingdom and France.
- India: Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) at Bengaluru, which traces its origin to Hindustan Aircraft founded in 1940, makes fighters, helicopters and transport aircraft, with units at Nashik, Kanpur, Lucknow and Koraput. The Tata-Airbus plant for C-295 transport aircraft at Vadodara was inaugurated in 2024. Bengaluru is the main aerospace cluster.
- Challenges: long design time, high cost, dependence on imported engines and materials, and the need for supplier networks. Defence production policies encourage private firms.
The aircraft industry is the most demanding of the group, since it needs the highest precision and strict safety certification, which is why only a few countries make complete civil aircraft. Parts come from many countries: wings, engines, avionics and fuselage sections are often built in different places and joined at the final assembly line. Maintenance, repair and overhaul of aircraft is a growing business in India, with large facilities at Bengaluru, Nagpur and Kochi, and the sector supports a large number of skilled jobs.
