Pali literature is the Buddhist writing in the Pali language preserved by the Theravada school. Its main part is the Tipitaka, the Three Baskets of Vinaya, Sutta and Abhidhamma, and it also includes works such as the Dhammapada, Jataka, Milindapanha and the Sri Lankan chronicles Dipavamsa and Mahavamsa.

What are the three parts of the Tipitaka?

The Tipitaka has the Vinaya Pitaka with rules of monastic conduct, the Sutta Pitaka with discourses of the Buddha in five Nikayas, and the Abhidhamma Pitaka with philosophical analysis. The Dhammapada and Jataka stories lie in the Khuddaka Nikaya of the Sutta Pitaka.

Which language family does Pali belong to?

Pali belongs to the Middle Indo-Aryan group within the Indo-European language family. It developed from older Indo-Aryan speech and is close to the Prakrits of Ashoka's edicts. It is the sacred language of Theravada Buddhism in Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand, Cambodia and Laos.

What is the classical language status of Pali?

Pali was declared a classical language by the Union Cabinet on 3 October 2024, together with Marathi, Prakrit, Assamese and Bengali. This took the total to eleven classical languages, and the list is unchanged as of November 2026.

Why is Pali literature important for UPSC?

Prelims asks about the divisions of the Tipitaka, the Dhammapada, Jataka tales and the Milindapanha. Pali also became a current affairs topic after its classical status in 2024, and it links to Buddhist councils, the Mauryan age and India's cultural ties with Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia.
