Indian Handicrafts
Art & Culture › Miscellaneous · Topic 11.15
Indian handicrafts are goods made largely by hand by artisans using traditional skills, such as textiles, metalware, pottery, woodwork, stone carving and toys. They are a major source of rural employment and exports, and the sector is overseen by the Development Commissioner (Handicrafts) under the Ministry of Textiles. The All India Handicrafts Board was set up in 1952 with Kamaladevi Chattopadhyay as a leading figure. Schemes include the National Handicrafts Development Programme and the PM Vishwakarma scheme of 2023. Many crafts, such as Pashmina, Bidriware and Channapatna toys, carry a GI tag, and Jaipur and Srinagar are UNESCO Creative Cities for crafts.
