Gupta Period Architecture

Art & Culture › Architecture · Topic 1.4

Gupta architecture (c. 320 to 550 CE) is the first phase of structural Hindu temple building in India, in stone and brick. An early Gupta temple is a small square flat-roofed shrine with a sanctum (garbhagriha) and a pillared porch, as at Tigawa and Sanchi Temple 17 in Madhya Pradesh. The Dashavatara temple at Deogarh (Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh) has a rising tower, and the brick temple at Bhitargaon (Kanpur Dehat, Uttar Pradesh) has terracotta panels. The rock-cut Udayagiri caves near Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh, hold the Varaha panel. These shrines seeded the Nagara style.

Where Does It Fit?

This topic follows the Post-Mauryan Buddhist phase and prepares the Nagara style. Gupta shrines are the seeds from which the northern temple form grew. Gupta painting and sculpture are treated in their own topics. Previous topic: Post-Mauryan Period (Sunga, Kanva, Kushana). Next topic: Buddhist Rock-cut & Stupa Architecture (Ajanta, Ellora, Elephanta Caves; Sanchi, Bharhut, Amaravati Stupas; Chaityas and Viharas).

What Are the Gupta Temple Features?

  • Garbhagriha: a small, dark square sanctum that holds the main image
  • Pillared porch: a front porch with four pillars and a flat roof in early shrines
  • Platform: a raised stone base with steps (jagati) that became standard in later temples
  • Doorway: richly carved, with the river goddesses Ganga and Yamuna at the base of the doorframe
  • Roof: flat in the first phase and later low pyramidal or curved, the start of the shikhara
  • Ambulatory: a covered path (pradakshina) around the sanctum in some temples
  • Material: stone laid with dry joints, and brick with lime
  • Sculpture: calm and classical figures and panels set into the walls

What Else Should You Remember?

  • Beginning of the temple: Hindu temple building takes shape in this age, because Vedic worship earlier needed no shrine
  • Deogarh details: The Dashavatara temple is not about ten avatars alone. Its panels show Anantashayana Vishnu on Shesha, Nara-Narayana and Gajendra Moksha, and the temple is dated to about the early sixth century
  • Early Nagara tower: Deogarh is a rare Gupta temple with traces of a tall tower, so it is considered an early example of the curved shikhara of the Nagara style, as in Nagara Style
  • Bhitargaon: The brick temple has bold terracotta panels with Shiva, Ganesha and Durga, and the plan is a tall, stepped structure
  • Udayagiri: Cave 5 has the colossal boar (Varaha) lifting the earth goddess, taken as a political image of Gupta power
  • Mahabodhi: The brick Mahabodhi temple at Bodh Gaya in Bihar was rebuilt in its present form around the Gupta period, and was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 2002
  • Dhamek stupa: The cylindrical stone and brick Dhamek stupa at Sarnath in Uttar Pradesh dates to about 500 CE and marks the site of the Buddha’s first sermon. The Ancient Buddhist Site of Sarnath, with Dhamek, Dharmarajika and Chaukhandi stupas, was inscribed by UNESCO in July 2026
  • Alternate names: The Dashavatara temple is also spelt Dasavatara, the Gupta age is called the classical age, and Udayagiri near Vidisha is distinct from Udayagiri in Odisha
  • Ajanta: Many caves at Ajanta were made in the Vakataka and late Gupta age, so cave halls are in Buddhist Rock-cut & Stupa Architecture (Ajanta, Ellora, Elephanta Caves; Sanchi, Bharhut, Amaravati Stupas; Chaityas and Viharas)
  • Nalanda: Founded in the reign of Kumaragupta I, it became the great Buddhist university and a vihara complex
  • Sculpture: For classical Gupta figures see Gupta Sculpture
  • Regional spread: Gupta temples cluster in central India and the Ganga valley, since this was the Gupta heartland
  • Panchayatana: A main shrine with four subsidiary shrines at corners appears in the following centuries

Why Does It Matter for the Exam?

  1. Match type: Deogarh with Dashavatara, Bhitargaon with brick and terracotta, Udayagiri with Varaha
  2. Features: flat roof, garbhagriha, river goddesses on the doorway
  3. States: Deogarh and Bhitargaon in Uttar Pradesh, Tigawa and Udayagiri in Madhya Pradesh
  4. Statements: typical traps are about the Mahabodhi temple being Mauryan or the Gupta use of lime in all temples
  5. Link: Gupta temples as the origin of the Nagara style

As an analytical point, the Gupta period is seen as a classical age because of the balance in its architecture and art. The temple moved from a simple shrine to a planned sacred space, which shows how a growing religious practice needed a lasting built form.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the features of Gupta temple architecture?

Early Gupta temples are small and square, with a flat roof, a dark sanctum called the garbhagriha and a pillared porch in front. The doorway is richly carved with river goddesses. Later shrines like Deogarh add a raised platform and the start of a tower.

Where is the Dashavatara temple?

The Dashavatara temple is at Deogarh in Lalitpur district, Uttar Pradesh. It is a Vishnu temple of about the early sixth century CE. It stands on a platform, once had a tower, and has famous panels of Anantashayana Vishnu, Nara-Narayana and Gajendra Moksha.

Which Gupta temple is made of brick?

The temple at Bhitargaon in Kanpur district, Uttar Pradesh, is a brick temple with a stepped tower and large terracotta panels. It is one of the oldest surviving brick temples in India. Terracotta plaques show deities such as Shiva, Ganesha and Durga.

What are the Udayagiri caves of Vidisha?

The Udayagiri caves near Vidisha in Madhya Pradesh are rock-cut shrines of the Gupta age, linked with Chandragupta II. Cave 5 has the colossal Varaha, the boar avatar of Vishnu, lifting the earth goddess. Many scholars read it as a symbol of Gupta imperial power.

Why is Gupta architecture important for UPSC?

Prelims asks for the temple at a site, the brick temple, the Varaha panel and the features of an early Gupta shrine. Mains asks whether the Gupta age was a golden age and how the temple began. The garbhagriha, platform and carved doorway became standard, and the Deogarh tower led to the Nagara shikhara.

What is the difference between Gupta and Mauryan architecture?

Mauryan architecture was a court art of polished stone pillars, rock-cut caves and a timber palace, with Buddhist and Ajivika uses. Gupta architecture introduced structural Hindu temples with a sanctum, porch and platform in stone and brick. The first expressed imperial symbols, the second gave the deity a lasting house.
