Classification of Indian Cinema Film (National Film Awards)
Art & Culture › Theatre, Cinema & Puppetry · Topic 6.9
Indian films are classified in three ways: by certification (CBFC categories U, UA with 7+, 13+ and 16+, A and S under the Cinematograph Act, 1952, amended in 2023), by style (mainstream or commercial, parallel or art, middle cinema, regional cinema) and by format (feature, non-feature, documentary, short, animation). The National Film Awards, started in 1954 and now run by the Government of India, honour the best of these. The top honour is the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, given since 1969 (first awardee Devika Rani) for lifetime contribution. The main prizes are the Swarna Kamal (Golden Lotus) for Best Feature Film and Best Director, and the Rajat Kamal (Silver Lotus) for others.

Why Does It Matter for the Exam?
- Certification: U, UA, A, S and the age bands
- Awards: Swarna Kamal against Rajat Kamal, Nargis Dutt, Indira Gandhi
- Phalke Award: year, first awardee and latest recipients
- Style: parallel versus mainstream
- Common errors: calling Phalke Award a Padma award, or giving the start year as 1969 for all National Film Awards
As an analytical point, classification and awards shape which films get funds, visibility and respect. Support for parallel, regional and children’s cinema helps balance the market power of commercial blockbusters.
