Bengali literature is the writing in Bengali (Bangla), an Eastern Indo-Aryan language of the Indo-European family, recognised as a classical language on 3 October 2024. Its earliest specimens are the Charyapada songs of Buddhist Siddhacharyas (8th to 12th century), discovered by Haraprasad Shastri in Nepal in 1907. Medieval landmarks are the Shreekrishna Kirtan of Baru Chandidas, the Krittivasi Ramayan and the Mangalkavyas. The modern age began with Fort William College, Michael Madhusudan Dutt, Bankim Chandra Chatterjee and Rabindranath Tagore, who received the Nobel Prize in 1913.
