Origin & Historical Evolution
2
Origin & Historical Evolution of Yoga
c. 3300โ€“1300 BCE โ€” Indus Valley Civilisation
Earliest evidence of Yoga โ€” Pashupati Seal from Mohenjo-daro depicts a figure in a meditative posture (proto-Shiva). Pre-Vedic origins widely accepted by scholars.
c. 1500โ€“500 BCE โ€” Vedic Period (Pre-Classical)
Rigveda first mentions the word yoga. Yoga primarily portrayed as meditative practice aimed at transcendence. Upanishads (c. 8th century BCE onward) elaborate on the nature of self (Atman) and Brahman โ€” philosophical foundation of Yoga.
c. 500 BCEโ€“800 CE โ€” Classical Period
Maharishi Patanjali composes the Yoga Sutras (c. 400 CE) โ€” the first systematic, scientific presentation of Yoga, containing 196 sutras in 4 chapters (Pada). Bhagavad Gita (c. 4th century BCE) devotes major sections to Yoga, calling it "ancient." Concept of five great vows (Pancha Mahavrata) by Mahavir and eightfold path by Buddha show early Yoga's broad influence.
800โ€“1700 CE โ€” Post-Classical Period
Adi Shankaracharya advances Jnana and Raja Yoga. Madhvacharya and Ramanujacharya contribute to Bhakti-Yoga philosophy. Hatha Yoga codified โ€” Hatha Yoga Pradipika (15th century) by Swatmarama. Mantra Yoga, Tantra Yoga, Laya Yoga develop in this era.
1700โ€“1900 CE โ€” Renaissance & Global Spread
Swami Vivekananda introduces Yoga to the West at the 1893 Chicago Parliament of World Religions. Ramana Maharshi, Ramakrishna Paramhansa, Paramhansa Yogananda shape modern Yoga thought.
20th Century โ€” Modern Global Yoga
T. Krishnamacharya (Mysore) pioneers modern postural yoga. B.K.S. Iyengar (Iyengar Yoga) and K. Pattabhi Jois (Ashtanga Vinyasa) globalize it. Patanjali Yogpeeth (Baba Ramdev) and modern institutes spread Yoga across India.

๐Ÿ’ก Exam Tip

UPSC often asks about the Pashupati Seal as the earliest evidence of Yoga. Remember: it is from Mohenjo-daro, part of the Indus Valley Civilisation. The figure is in a seated meditative posture surrounded by animals โ€” linked to proto-Shiva worship.

2NiyamaเคจเคฟเคฏเคฎPersonal observances โ€” Purity (Saucha), Contentment (Santosa), Austerity (Tapas), Self-study (Svadhyaya), Surrender to God (Ishvara Pranidhana)
3Asanaเค†เคธเคจBodily postures โ€” physical fitness and stability
4PranayamaเคชเฅเคฐเคพเคฃเคพเคฏเคพเคฎBreath control โ€” regulation of life force (prana)
5PratyaharaเคชเฅเคฐเคคเฅเคฏเคพเคนเคพเคฐWithdrawal of the senses from external objects

7DhyanaเคงเฅเคฏเคพเคจMeditation โ€” uninterrupted flow of concentration
8SamadhiเคธเคฎเคพเคงเคฟComplete absorption โ€” superconscious state; goal of Yoga
๐Ÿ“Œ Micro-Fact โ€” Samkhya-Yoga Link

Patanjali's Yoga philosophy is closely linked to Samkhya darshana (one of the six orthodox schools of Indian philosophy). Samkhya provides the theoretical framework โ€” dualism of Purusha (pure consciousness) and Prakriti (matter/nature). Yoga adds the practical dimension of how to achieve separation of Purusha from Prakriti through disciplined practice.

๐Ÿ’ก Exam Tip โ€” Sequence Memory

Remember the 8 limbs in order with: YN-AP-PDD-S โ†’ Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi. The first two (Yama, Niyama) are ethical; the next two (Asana, Pranayama) are physical; Pratyahara is the bridge; the last three (Dharana, Dhyana, Samadhi) are mental/meditative โ€” together called Samyama.

Patanjali's Yoga Sutras = 196 sutras in 4 Pada | Ashtanga = 8 limbs (Yama โ†’ Samadhi) | Philosophical base = Samkhya dualism | Samyama = last 3 limbs (Dharana + Dhyana + Samadhi) | "Yogas chitta-vritti-nirodhah" โ€” most quoted UPSC one-liner from this section

Statement Verification Table โ€” True or False?
StatementVerdictCorrect Fact
"The UN proclaimed 21 June as International Yoga Day through Resolution 69/131 on 10 December 2014"โŒ FalseAdopted 11 December 2014 (not 10th); 10 Dec = Human Rights Day
"Yoga was inscribed as UNESCO ICH in 2014 when the UN resolution was adopted"โŒ FalseUN resolution = 2014; UNESCO ICH = 1 December 2016 โ€” two separate events two years apart
"175 nations co-sponsored the IDY resolution โ€” the highest ever for any UNGA resolution"โœ… True175 co-sponsors (some sources say 177); record at the time for any UNGA resolution
"Patanjali's Yoga Sutras contain 195 sutras divided in 6 chapters"โŒ False196 sutras (or 195 in some traditions) in 4 chapters (Pada), not 6
"Asana is the 4th limb in Patanjali's Ashtanga Yoga"โŒ FalseAsana is the 3rd limb; Pranayama is the 4th
"Ahmedabad was India's first UNESCO World Heritage Site"โŒ FalseAhmedabad was India's first UNESCO World Heritage City (2017). First Heritage Sites were Agra Fort + Taj Mahal (1983)
"The 1st World Yogasana Championship was held in Puducherry in 1989"โŒ FalseThere was a Yogasana event in Puducherry in 1989 under a different banner; the first official World Yogasana Sport Championship was held in Ahmedabad in 2026

"The IDY 2026 theme 'Yoga for Healthy Ageing' was announced at Yoga Mahotsav in Bhubaneswar"โŒ FalseAnnounced at Yoga Mahotsav 2026 held at Western Group of Temples, Khajuraho (not Bhubaneswar; Bhubaneswar was the 75-day countdown event for IDY 2025)
"Samadhi is the 7th limb of Ashtanga Yoga"โŒ FalseSamadhi is the 8th (final) limb; Dhyana is the 7th
โš  Trap 1 โ€” 11 Dec 2014 vs 10 Dec 2014

The IDY resolution was adopted on 11 December 2014, not 10 December. UPSC options often substitute "10 December" (which is International Human Rights Day) to trap students who confuse major UN dates in December.

โš  Trap 2 โ€” Yoga ICH Year

Yoga became UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016, not 2014 or 2015. The sequence is: 2014 (UN resolution) โ†’ 2015 (1st IDY) โ†’ 2016 (UNESCO ICH). Many students collapse 2014 and 2016 into a single year.

โš  Trap 3 โ€” Limb Numbers in Ashtanga

The three most commonly missequenced limbs: Asana = 3rd (not 4th), Pranayama = 4th (not 3rd), Dhyana = 7th (not 8th), Samadhi = 8th (not 7th). UPSC tests the exact sequence, not just names.

โš  Trap 4 โ€” UNESCO Heritage City vs Heritage Site

Ahmedabad = India's 1st UNESCO World Heritage City (2017). This is different from a "World Heritage Site." India has 42 World Heritage Sites (as of 2024). Ahmedabad is the only city in India with the "World Heritage City" designation. Don't confuse with Varanasi (UNESCO Creative City of Music) or Jaipur (UNESCO World Heritage Site, 2019).

โš  Trap 5 โ€” WYC 2026 Mascot Name

WYC 2026 mascot is "Veer the Lion" โ€” not a Yoga practitioner figure, not a peacock (India's national bird). UPSC mascot questions are routine for major championship events hosted by India.

๐Ÿ’ก Exam Tip โ€” Ashtanga vs Astanga Vinyasa

Do NOT confuse Patanjali's Ashtanga Yoga (classical 8-limbed Yoga philosophy) with Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga (a modern physical yoga style developed by K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore in the 20th century). UPSC deals with the classical Ashtanga from Patanjali's Yoga Sutras.

Key UPSC traps: 11 Dec (not 10) | ICH = 2016 (not 2014/2015) | Asana = 3rd limb (not 4th) | Samadhi = 8th (not 7th) | Ahmedabad = Heritage CITY (not first Heritage Site) | Khelo India Yogasana = 2021 (not 2019) | WYC mascot = Veer the Lion

MCQ Practice โ€” 5 UPSC-Style Questions on Yoga & Yogasana 2026
1Consider the following statements about the International Day of Yoga:
1. The United Nations adopted the resolution proclaiming 21 June as International Yoga Day on 10 December 2014.
2. The resolution was co-sponsored by a record 175 member states โ€” the highest for any UN General Assembly resolution at the time.
3. The first International Day of Yoga was observed at Rajpath (now Kartavya Path), New Delhi.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
Correct: (c) 2 and 3 only

Statement 1 โ€” WRONG: The UNGA adopted Resolution 69/131 on 11 December 2014, not 10 December (10 Dec = International Human Rights Day โ€” a classic trap).
Statement 2 โ€” CORRECT: 175 nations co-sponsored โ€” record for any UNGA resolution at the time.
Statement 3 โ€” CORRECT: 1st IDY on 21 June 2015 was held at Rajpath (now Kartavya Path), New Delhi, with PM Modi leading 21 asanas for 35 minutes.
2Which of the following is the correct sequence of Patanjali's Ashtanga Yoga limbs from 3rd to 6th?
Correct: (b) Asana โ†’ Pranayama โ†’ Pratyahara โ†’ Dharana

The 8 limbs in order: (1) Yama, (2) Niyama, (3) Asana, (4) Pranayama, (5) Pratyahara, (6) Dharana, (7) Dhyana, (8) Samadhi.
Options (c) and (d) swap Dharana and Pratyahara โ€” both are common traps. The last three limbs (6-7-8 = Dharana-Dhyana-Samadhi) together are called Samyama.
3With reference to the 1st World Yogasana Sport Championship 2026, consider the following:
1. It was held at EKA Arena in Ahmedabad, India's first UNESCO World Heritage City.
2. The official mascot of the championship was "Garuda the Eagle."
3. India topped the medal tally with 102 gold medals out of a total of 114 medals won.
4. PM Narendra Modi inaugurated the championship via video conferencing.

Correct: (c) 1, 3 and 4 only

Statement 1 โ€” โœ… Correct: EKA Arena, Ahmedabad. Ahmedabad is India's first UNESCO World Heritage City (2017).
Statement 2 โ€” โŒ Wrong: The mascot was "Veer the Lion" โ€” not Garuda the Eagle. Classic mascot trap.
Statement 3 โ€” โœ… Correct: India won 102 gold and 114 total medals.
Statement 4 โ€” โœ… Correct: PM Modi declared the championship open via video conferencing on June 4, 2026.
4Match the following International Day of Yoga themes with their respective years:
A. "Yoga for Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" โ€” 1. 2022
B. "Yoga for Humanity" โ€” 2. 2023
C. "Yoga for Healthy Ageing" โ€” 3. 2025
D. "Yoga for One Earth, One Health" โ€” 4. 2026
Correct: (b) A-2, B-1, C-4, D-3

"Yoga for Humanity" = 2022 (8th IDY; main event Mysuru, Karnataka) โ†’ B-1.
"Yoga for Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam" = 2023 (9th IDY; India's G20 presidency theme) โ†’ A-2.
"Yoga for One Earth, One Health" = 2025 (11th IDY; Harit Yoga initiative) โ†’ D-3.
"Yoga for Healthy Ageing" = 2026 (12th IDY; host: Kolkata; announced at Khajuraho) โ†’ C-4.
5Which of the following statements correctly describes Yoga's inscription on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage (ICH) list?
Correct: (c)

Yoga was inscribed on 1 December 2016 at the 11th session of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of ICH held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. All 24 members voted unanimously. It was India's 13th ICH element at the time.
Option (d) is wrong โ€” Kumbh Mela was inscribed in 2017 (12th session), after Yoga (2016). They were inscribed at different sessions.
MCQ Focus: UN resolution date (11 Dec 2014) | ICH year (2016, Addis Ababa, unanimous) | 8 limbs sequence | WYC 2026 mascot = Veer the Lion | IDY themes 2022-2026 | India's 102 golds at WYC 2026
